What’s it like working at Specsavers?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees value the supportive colleagues at Specsavers, with many forming close friendships and describing their teams as family. The benefits, including free glasses and discounts, are appreciated, along with flexible working arrangements that support work/life balance. The comprehensive training programmes and valuable skills development in optics make employees highly employable in the industry.

However, there are some potential challenges, including varying management styles across stores that can affect communication and consistency. Some locations experience cliquey dynamics that may impact newer team members. The fast-paced environment can be demanding during busy periods, and some employees feel remuneration could better reflect the clinical skills required. Career progression beyond supervisory roles and recognition of achievements are areas some employees would like to see enhanced.

    Wouldn't recommend to anyone
The good thingsMake a few life long friends through trauma bonding.
The challengesManagement is the biggest issue here. The workplace can be toxic and cliquey, with gossip, favouritism and unrealistic expectations. Staff feedback is often ignored, while mistakes are scrutinised and achievements go unrecognised. The role requires significant clinical knowledge and ongoing training, yet the pay is essentially retail-level and doesn’t reflect the skills or responsibility expected. “Paid” training is frequently encouraged or expected to be completed at home, alongside unpaid overtime. Staffing can be inadequate, making an already fast-paced environment stressful. Despite this, there is little genuine support or recognition for staff wellbeing. There are also concerns around workplace consultation, including changes to working practices being made without properly consulting staff, despite NSW WHS requirements. Overall, poor pay, excessive expectations, unpaid work, toxic management, gossip and lack of support make this a workplace I would not recommend.
