I’ve felt valued in every role I’ve had with Wellways
The good thingsThe people you work with and alongside are very special. I’ve worked for a couple of different services and made some lifelong friends!
The challengesUsual workplace challenges trying to work in advocacy spaces while operating in the confines of funding body requirements/ budget leads to lots of changes constantly which you have to learn to get used too.

    Not a safe, supportive workplace.
    The good thingsFlexible work arrangements
The challengesThere was a noticeable lack of leadership, ownership, or accountability among middle, senior, and executive management. You were unlikely to hear the words “that was my responsibility.” Internal politics and self-preservation dominated, with management more concerned with how they appeared, passing the buck, and advancing personal interests rather than nurturing a genuinely fair and inclusive workplace, or exhibiting real leadership qualities. Glaringly inconsistent professional and behavioural standards applied depending on the level and internal alliances. People & Culture seemed to actively encourage and reward a culture of complaints, blame-shifting, and retaliation rather than fostering one of collaboration, compassion, and integrity. Overall, it was not a safe or supportive workplace environment, with wide-ranging, systemic, deep-rooted issues at every level.

Micromanagement, lack of empathy & empty values make ‘bring your whole self’ to work feel false.
The good thingsThe occasional flexibility to work from home (when approved by my manager) and in the office, along with the privilege of meeting some truly wonderful program staff along the way.
The challengesBefore joining Wellways, I was hesitant because of the number of negative reviews I’ve seen online. However, I chose to overlook them & accepted a position at head office. In hindsight, I wish I had taken these reviews more seriously. At the time, I was flattered to hear that the director of my team was particularly keen for me to join, but unfortunately, my experience didn’t reflect that enthusiasm. My main issue was with middle management. I felt my manager was overly controlling and dismissive of new ideas. For an organisation that promotes the idea of bringing your “whole self” to work, this felt disingenuous. While my LGBTIQA+ identity was acknowledged, the grief and depression I experienced after losing close family members weren’t met with empathy. My sadness and withdrawal were viewed as unfavourable, and I was ultimately issued a warning. You can’t truly bring your whole self to work if vulnerability isn’t accepted. Middle management needs training to handle micromanagement.
