What’s it like working at Interrelate?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees appreciate the supportive and friendly colleagues at Interrelate, with team members consistently described as approachable and helpful. The organisation's commitment to flexible work arrangements and work/life balance is highly valued, contributing to its recognition through workplace awards for employee wellbeing and engagement. Staff find the work meaningful and rewarding, particularly those supporting individuals and families, and appreciate the above-award pay and additional benefits such as salary sacrificing and birthday leave. The thorough onboarding process and accessible support resources are also noted as strengths.

However, there are some potential challenges, including a top-down management approach where decisions may be made without sufficient staff consultation. Some employees have identified limited opportunities for career growth in certain roles and a need for increased training budgets. Workloads can be demanding during busy periods, and resources may be stretched, which can affect service delivery. Additionally, some staff have suggested that organisational frameworks could be strengthened, such as separating clinical supervision from line management responsibilities.

A good place to work. (Caring and Professional)
The good thingsInterrelate has received the “Best Workplace Award” voted by its employees for several years. This is a confidential survey and speaks for itself. They have great flexible work arrangements and consider the needs of their staff. Senior executive and management seek to embody the values they represent. Interrelate staff genuinely care about the clients and the service they provide. I am glad services like Interrelate still exist and operate in a caring professional manner.
The challengesChallenges arise from time to time as in any workplace but are normally handled well.

Poor workplace culture and leadership do not reflect the organisation’s values.
The good thingsThe programs themselves have the potential to be extremely beneficial for the community. When delivered effectively, they can create meaningful positive outcomes for individuals and families. Many of the practitioners I worked alongside were passionate, kind, and genuinely committed to supporting the community.
The challengesInterrelate promotes itself as “the foundation of healthy relationships,” however, my experience as a practitioner did not reflect this value internally. A workplace culture where power imbalances and dominating behaviours, particularly from male management, created an environment that felt unsafe and unsupported. Rather than modelling healthy communication and respect, the culture often mirrored dynamics that the organisation aims to address in its client work. I believe organisations working in the relationship and wellbeing space have a responsibility to uphold these values not only externally, but within their own teams. Internal barriers from management, program leads, and practice specialists, along with a lack of resources, often make it difficult for practitioners to implement their work to its full potential.
