Unsustainable workload, poor communication, and a micromanaged culture with little genuine support
The good thingsA lot of fun in the beginning, work lunches are thrown in, no 2 days are the same, lots of exposure to different suppliers and the industry, great staff discount for furniture
The challengesThe workload was consistently excessive. I was regularly required to drive several hours to site, complete full-day installations, and then drive hours back, often on consecutive days, without overtime. The role was extremely physically demanding and not sustainable long-term. Sick leave was questioned rather than supported. When I took a week off for a personal matter, I was made to feel like an inconvenience. Shortly after, I was placed on a Performance Improvement Plan that was an exit strategy opposed to support. Career growth was promised but not delivered. During a period when my manager was on extended leave, expectations and feedback were not communicated. Upon their return, I was told I had not met duties that had never been clearly outlined or discussed. The environment was highly micromanaged and lacked direct communication. Issues were discussed behind my back and escalated to HR without any prior conversation. Was later advised this experience was common.
