What's it like to be a Plumber?
Plumbers are specialist tradespeople who install and repair water, drainage, gas and sewerage pipes and systems. They often specialise in certain types of plumbing work. For example, they may work on large-scale construction projects or focus more of smaller domestic projects. Plumbers often work closely with other tradespeople and project management teams.
Tasks and duties
- Studying blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems and materials required.
- Installing hot and cold water systems and associated equipment.
- Installing gas appliances, flues and pressure regulating devices.
How to become a Plumber
You can become a Plumber by completing a three-to-four-year long apprenticeship, during which time you need to be employed as an apprentice. As part of your training, you will complete a Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32420).
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32420) as part of an apprenticeship.
- 2.Ensure you have a Construction Induction Card (White Card) which will enable you to work on construction sites. Some hirers may also prefer you to have a current driver’s licence, Working with Children Check and access to your own tools.
- 3.Apply for the required licences and accreditation to work as a Plumber in your state or territory. Check with your local licensing authority for specific details.
- 4.To carry out more advanced or specialised work, consider further study such as a Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40920).
