What's it like to be a Fitter?
Fitters study drawings, plans, specifications and blueprints in order to fit, assemble and shape machinery parts and other equipment. There are different types of Fitters including general Fitters, Mechanical Fitters, Maintenance Fitters, and Fitters and Turners.
Tasks and duties
- Reviewing drawings and blueprints in order to establish which materials, methods and settings are required for particular parts and processes.
- Fitting parts into machinery and equipment, checking parts for accuracy and fit, using tools to cut, file, plane, bore and drill metal.
- Diagnosing problems with machines and reporting issues to manager, ensuring that health and safety regulations are followed.
How to become a Fitter
To work as a Fitter in Australia, you’ll usually need a trade qualification combined with, or in place of, a completed apprenticeship.
- 1.Complete a Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) (MEM30205) as part of an apprenticeship at a TAFE (or registered training institute).
- 2.Gain practical experience as a qualified Fitter and consider moving into a specific industry such as manufacturing, construction or transport.
- 3.Alternatively, investigate requirements for specialisation, such as becoming a Diesel Fitter, Fitter-Machinist or Fitter-Mechanic.
