What's it like to be a Fitter and Turner?
A Fitter and Turner fabricates industrial tools, components and products from metal. Working to a set of specifications, they operate tools and machines to grind, mill and shape raw materials into the specified form, then assembling the final product.
Tasks and duties
- Cutting, grinding and shaping metal and other materials.
- Interpreting diagrams, drawings, specifications and plans to determine suitable material and sequence of operations.
- Operating specialised tools and machinery.
- Assembling fabricated parts to produce products, tools and machines.
- Following safety protocols.
- Diagnosing and repairing faults with tools and machinery, and performing regular maintenance.
- Setting up tools and machinery for fabrication process, including guides, stops and other controls.
- Monitoring fabrication process and adjusting settings when necessary.
How to become a Fitter and Turner
A relevant vocational qualification, often completed as part of an apprenticeship, is usually required to work as a Fitter and Turner. Workers with extensive fabrication experience may also be able to transition into a Fitter and Turner role.
- 1.Complete a relevant qualification such as a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (MEM30219). You may be able to complete this as part of an apprenticeship.
- 2.Continue to gain hands-on, practical experience as a qualified tradesperson.
