What's it like to be a Gasfitter?
Gasfitters work on gas lines and equipment in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. They inspect, install, maintain and repair gas lines such as heating units, appliances, regulators and meters. While a licensed Plumber can carry out some gas-fitting tasks, a qualified Gasfitter may not undertake any plumbing work.
Tasks and duties
- Inspecting, installing, maintaining and repairing gas lines, gas meters, regulators and appliances.
- Attending investigations of gas leaks, fires and explosions.
- Testing and repairing or replacing faulty equipment downstream of the billing meter.
- Advising customers on gas safety, appliance features and gas unit maintenance.
- Interpreting blueprints for buildings.
- Preparing reports and completing insurance paperwork.
How to become a Gasfitter
You will need to complete an apprenticeship to become a Gasfitter. You’ll also need to be licensed in your state.
- Complete a Certificate IV in Gas Supply Industry Operations (UEG40118) as part of an apprenticeship.
- Depending on the state or territory you live in, you will need to register with the appropriate authority that regulates the building industry. Check with your state government department or online for more details.
- Get accredited to enter any construction site in Australia with a White Card.
