Learn on the job with no experience and give it a try
The good thingsI started here with no experience and have been trained up to become a Driller Assistant. I came from farming, so was pretty easy to adjust. The equipment is good as there are a lot of manual handling aids, which makes the job easier. Lots to learn, my crew and supervisors are really good and I am learning something new every day.
The challengesIt is long days and shift work, but you get used to it after a few weeks. The rosters are good though because I get more time at home than a normal local job. Not everyone will like the work or working away, but learn from everyone you can and give it a good crack!

Ideal for a foot in the door
The good thingsEasy to to start with entry level company to get your foot in the door for mining or drilling experience, some good people/supervisors at certain sites
The challengesArguably the worst pay-to-conditions for a drilling company with the reputation to show for it, use it to get experience and then find something different. They also strip your bonus for not taking vids of yourself for their own little training system.

gave me an insight into the drilling industry, your experience may be better than mine as each driller and supervisor is different and doesn’t reflect values of whole company.
The good thingsfifo from anywhere in Australia. they are big on eliminating manual handling - rod handler takes out a lot of the heavy lifting. if you can handle long hours and but not the strongest person - this is a good job for you if you want to get into drilling and adjust your strength over time. the pay rate is also competitive.
The challengesI experienced a real bad culture issue such as: driller: “scrub the cones”, me: “oh I did it yesterday” , “do it again” - this kind of thing is prevalent even when you’ve broken your back keeping the rig spotless, production going perfectly, and safety paperwork perfect. it’s bewildering this company tries to be most progressive company with equipment and manual handling - but don’t seem to care as much about the work place culture and clear expectations.
