What’s it like working at Lutheran Services?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees consistently praise the dedication and compassion of frontline staff and colleagues, who provide exceptional care in a supportive team environment. Staff appreciate the meaningful and rewarding work, the flexibility and work/life balance offered, and the training and development opportunities available. The organisation's faith-based ethos attracts people who genuinely care about making a difference.

However, there are some potential challenges, including concerns about organisational culture and senior leadership in some areas, staffing and recruitment difficulties that can impact workload, and the need for clearer communication around expectations. Some employees have noted challenges with limited resources and outdated technology systems, as well as opportunities to improve remuneration and support organisational modernisation.

The most professionally damaging experience of my career — one that left me questioning everything.
The good thingsThe frontline staff are by far one of the organisation’s greatest strengths. Many are incredibly dedicated to the residents they support and continue to provide compassionate, quality care despite working in very challenging circumstances. There are also some genuinely excellent Service Managers who work extremely hard to advocate for their residents and support their teams. Unfortunately, in my experience, they are often expected to do this while navigating significant internal politics, pressure from above and a workplace culture that can be extremely toxic. The organisation has some very good people at the frontline and service-management level who genuinely care and continue trying to do the right thing despite the environment they are working within.
The challengesThe biggest challenge for me was the organisational culture. Established relationships and internal dynamics could carry significant influence, and challenging the status quo or bringing fresh ideas was not always welcomed. Senior operational leaders could carry considerable accountability while having limited authority to make meaningful decisions. Layers of red tape and lengthy approval processes added to this frustration and often made relatively straightforward matters unnecessarily difficult to progress. At times, interactions with corporate support functions and senior leadership felt unnecessarily adversarial rather than collaborative. There were also challenges with ageing infrastructure, limited resources and a noticeable disconnect between the organisation’s stated values and what I experienced in practice. After raising concerns, I felt increasingly scrutinised rather than supported, which left me questioning the psychological safety for leaders who challenge practices.

Avoid at all costs. An organisation led by a toxic boys club with no care for staff or its clients.
The good thingsThe only genuine positive was the dedication of the frontline workforce. Operational employees consistently went above and beyond to deliver exceptional care and support for clients, often despite the organisational challenges they faced. Their compassion, professionalism and commitment are the organisation’s greatest strength. Unfortunately, in my experience, these employees were not given the respect, recognition or value they deserved, making it difficult to see their efforts consistently acknowledged or rewarded.
The challengesIn almost two decades of professional experience, this was by far the most toxic workplace culture I have encountered. Lutheran Services promotes the Lutheran Ethos of Grace, Respect and Care, Dignity and Honour, and All Welcome, alongside values of Empowerment, Integrity, Innovation and Kindness. In my experience, those values were not reflected in practice whatsoever. I found the culture to be driven by internal politics, egos, and personal interests rather than merit. It often felt that existing relationships carried more influence than capability or performance, creating a perception of favouritism and leaving many talented employees overlooked. Decision-making was concentrated within a small group (3) of “leaders”, with little openness to feedback or new ideas. The result was an organisation resistant to change, lacking accountability, and led by a leadership culture that was controlling, dismissive and deeply toxic. I would not recommend Lutheran Services as an employer.
