We understand that today we are a culturally diverse nation of more that 23 million people with different likes and dislikes. That’s why, through our network of independently owned stores (all 1,400 of them) we tailor our ranges and brands to give our local customers more of what they like it. This includes many of your favourite brands, the ones you may no longer find on shelves in other supermarkets. We proudly support Aussie producers too by stocking ranges of locally made products. We actively participate in the communities around our stores doing whatever we can to help local schools, surf clubs or hospitals whether it’s footie balls for the under 14’s or life-saving equipment.Though IGA Community Chest we continually raise funds to support local communities, charities and other worthwhile causes, to date we’ve put well over $60 million back into communities across the country. But at the beginning of each day, we open our doors for one reason and one reason only, to deliver a shopping experience how the locals like it.Source: this is an extract from the company’s own website

What’s it like working at IGA?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees appreciate the friendly team environment at IGA, with supportive colleagues who work well together. Many enjoy interacting with customers and building relationships with the local community. The opportunity to develop valuable skills such as time management, communication, and customer service is valued, along with flexible shifts and consistent hours for casual employees.

However, there are some potential challenges, such as communication from management being inconsistent and sometimes unclear. Staffing levels can be tight during peak hours, which may add pressure, and rostering can be inconsistent with late notice of schedules. Training may be limited in some locations, requiring self-learning, and pay progression is fairly limited. The role can also be physically demanding during long or busy shifts.

A supportive workplace with a strong team culture, though sometimes demanding during busy periods.
The good thingsI enjoyed the team environment and the opportunity to interact with customers daily. The workplace was generally friendly, and I learned valuable skills like time management, communication, and handling busy periods. Flexible shifts were helpful, especially when balancing other commitments. Management was usually supportive, and there were opportunities to take on more responsibility over time.
The challengesThe job can be physically demanding, especially during long shifts or busy periods. Staffing levels can sometimes be tight, which adds pressure during peak hours. Pay progression is fairly limited, and some shifts (like weekends or late evenings) can be difficult to maintain long-term. Communication from management could occasionally be clearer.

Overall, a really good starting point in life as soon as you hit the age requirement to earn a job!
The good thingsAble to work with any friends after school and make more inside the store from different departments. Adult staff are very friendly and will make you feel welcome.
The challengesCustomers can be rather aggressive if they come into the store after having a bad day. Just smile and wave, don't make any insults or comments on them. Keep your thoughts to yourself until the end of your shift and out of the store.
