Overall, a positive experience, offering professional growth despite the challenges of the sector.
The good thingsOverall, I had a positive experience working at IFYS. I felt supported as I developed my professional practice and gained confidence in the role. The team was generally supportive, and although everyone had different personalities and ways of working, we shared a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we supported. I did not always agree with decisions, but I felt comfortable sharing my views. Open communication was generally encouraged, although at times, some information could have been communicated more clearly and transparently. I appreciated IFYS's efforts to support work–life balance, particularly as a working parent. The work could be challenging at times, as is often the case in the child protection sector, but having a supportive team leader and an approachable manager made those challenges easier to manage. Overall, I am grateful for the experience and for the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally.
The challengesHaving read some of the other reviews, I noticed that “toxic management” was mentioned several times. I am pleased to say that this was not my experience and I felt the need to write a balanced review. I had limited interaction with other programs, so I cannot comment on those areas in detail. However, I believe executive leaders have made a greater effort in recent years to listen to staff and address concerns. At times, the focus on compliance and close oversight made it difficult to balance administrative requirements with other priorities and direct work. Although learning and development were encouraged, the demands of the role sometimes made it difficult to take advantage of those opportunities. Opportunities for career development within my role felt somewhat limited, but I believe my manager would have supported me in moving into another part of the organisation if a suitable opportunity had arisen.

The challengesUpper management and those looking to move up can create an extremely toxic and political environment. There is more red tape than I’ve ever seen in this industry, to the point where it feels like they’d make you fill out a form just to use the bathroom. The company is slow to evolve, workloads are often unreasonable, and there seems to be a real lack of understanding and support from leadership. I’ve also never experienced so much gossip in such a short span of time; morale and trust are low, and it genuinely feels like many people there simply do not like or respect one another.
