What’s it like working at Finisar?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees at Finisar appreciate working with talented and supportive colleagues, including knowledgeable scientists and engineers who share their expertise. Managers are supportive and encourage skill development, whilst the work/life balance is excellent with flexibility around leave. The technically challenging work involving complex electronics and unique optical telecommunication products is rewarding, and pay rates are above average with opportunities for overtime.

However, there are some potential challenges, including limited career progression and internal growth opportunities as the company has matured. Some positions are contract-based with one-year terms that may be renewed, which can complicate long-term planning. Senior management tends to be conservative and reactive, and there is limited formal training and development provided. Additionally, the environment can be fast-paced with pressure to meet production targets and yields.

Had a great work experience for 7 years. Very talented and dedicated team of scientists & engineers.
The good thingsStrong environment for early-career PhDs transitioning into applied industry work. The team combines solid scientific depth with practical engineering execution, which is reflected in the development of competitive WSS products. Management is supportive and encourages skill development, though expectations around innovative solutions and delivery are real and performance-driven. Best suited for young scientists and engineers who want to move beyond theory and want to do real high-tech product development. Good work-life balance.
The challengesBetter in-house machining resources could streamline and significantly enhance production efficiency.

    Partime or contract is ok.
The good thingsThey have above than normal pay rate.
The challengesHard to get permanent job, busy and not preferred you to overtime, fast pace & high pressure. HR not very human oriented and always talk about company policy rather than think as a worker.

Great people, great product, excellent work/life balance
The good thingsVery enjoyable working with very talented scientists and engineers. Also, I am grateful to be with my manager as he's been always supportive. The work/life balance is also great. I haven't heard or seen any other companies with flexibility and no pressure when taking leaves.
The challengesAs the company is a subsidiary of US-based company, the management by the senior board can be seen as a bit passive and reactive (which I can totally understand). Since the company is at the mature stage, there is not much room for career progress compared to the early days.
