Bengalla Mining Company, located four kilometres south west of Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, supplies international markets with thermal coal.Bengalla is an open cut mine, using a dragline, truck and excavator method. After being washed and prepared for sale, the coal is loaded onto trains for transportation 130km to the port of Newcastle where it is shipped to international customers.Bengalla Mining Company is a joint venture ownership with Wesfarmers holding 40%, New Hope Group 40%, Mitsui 10% and Taipower 10%.We currently have 383 permanent employees and 193 category 1 contractors. In addition to this the operation uses between 120 and 130 category 3 contracts, with the majority of our workforce living in the Muswellbrook, Upper Hunter and Singleton Shires.Bengalla received an initial 21 year development consent in 1996. The consent was renewed in March 2015 and extends mining through to 2039.
