What’s it like working at Beacon Lighting?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees value the supportive team environment at store level, with colleagues who help each other and work well together. The variety of work keeps things interesting, with different projects each day and opportunities to work creatively with customers. Training and development resources are available through online modules and programmes, and there are career opportunities to move between stores and into different roles. Employee benefits such as discounts and flexible working arrangements are also appreciated.

However, there are some potential challenges, including a disconnect between senior management and store teams regarding decision-making and communication. Understaffing and high workload can be demanding, particularly for management roles, with expectations of overtime. The extensive and changing product range requires ongoing learning. Some employees have raised concerns about pay levels and recognition for service, limited progression opportunities in certain roles, and variability in work culture between different stores.

Honestly this company couldn’t organise a cold beer at the pub
The good thingsGoing home at the end of the day
The challengesCooperate management would rather hire kids with no experience & pay them peanuts rather than actually hire a skilled professional with experience in the field. No idea about electrical regulations, electrical certificates or anything trade related. Would get questioned on every purchase, even consumables like electrical tape and connectors. More concerned with saving money and protecting the brand image than customer satisfaction and quality instals. Then after 6 months of employment Beacon decided to terminate every single electrician they employed. I was working In WA at the time (living in Melbourne) and I was fired over the phone with 1 weeks notice. Other members with over 15+ years experience were shown the same respect. I’ve since learned this is a strategy they’ve made before. When things get hard fire the skilled staff who keep the company turning while the fat wigs at the top keep their big fat pay check. Honestly this company couldn’t organise a cold beer at the pub.

Not many worse ways to spend your time
The good thingsThe in store team environment; everyone got along with everyone and it could be rather relaxed at times
The challengesEveryone in a position above store manager needs to be fired and replaced as the culture that they have cultivated in the higher ranks is one of power and control. Some of the most truly vile people I have ever met. And even if they were nice about it, the policies and procedures that they put in place shows how big the disconnect between the corporate offices and the stores really is, as within my year+ there not a single change was made to benefit us, just harder to achieve bonuses and higher monthly expectations as a reward for good performance, with all actually promised rewards forgotten about and never given out.

Wasted a lot of years with a company who have poor values and treat staff poorly.
The good thingsBuilding relations with a good group of overworked people
The challengesEverything. From the poor pay. The poor culture that. The the state manager not concerning himself of the wellbeing of his stores and staff.
