What’s it like working at ALDI?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees appreciate the supportive and friendly colleagues at ALDI, with many noting that the relationships they build with team members are a key source of motivation and make the work experience more enjoyable. The pay and benefits are competitive, and employees value the variety in duties that comes with working in a busy retail environment. ALDI also offers opportunities for internal progression, with training and support for those moving into new roles.

However, there are some potential challenges. Employees indicate that upper management may be disconnected from store-level realities, and performance expectations and KPIs can be strict, with timed tasks that some find challenging to meet. Staffing levels can be lean, requiring fewer team members to complete tasks, which contributes to the physically demanding and fast-paced nature of the work. Positive recognition can be infrequent, with feedback often focusing on areas for improvement. Additionally, the experience varies significantly by store, depending on local management and team culture.

The good thingsFirst 4 years was great, that's about it
The challengesEverything, aldi has become a very toxic workplace coming from the top down, cutting hours, expecting more with less, putting all the pressure on middle management and caring less about their people. You feel over worked under appreciated and constant sickies and challenges everyday that don't need to be there, I don't see aldi improving or trying to improve anytime soon

Understaffed, disregard of staff wellbeing, unsafe conditions, and lack of managerial accountability
The good thingsDespite a major culture issue in the workplace one of the most enjoyable aspects of my time here was the friendships I had built within the team. We developed positive dynamic that made a real difference to the day‑to‑day work experience. The relationships I formed were meaningful, and the team became a key source of motivation and connection. When resigning, the team was genuinely the hardest part to leave.
The challengesThere was an ongoing lack of support from management, with staff frequently spoken down to, yelled at, and shown little empathy for personal circumstances. Despite repeated reductions in hours, expectations remained unchanged. Shifts that normally required five staff were reduced to three, and shifts requiring three were reduced to two, creating serious work health and safety risks. As a result, theft increased noticeably, leading to ongoing concerns for personal safety. I was physically assaulted by multiple customers during this time, and these incidents were not adequately acknowledged or addressed. Performance expectations were unrealistic, with tasks strictly timed and failure to meet benchmarks resulting in formal write‑ups. Positive reinforcement and appreciation were minimal. While a “Moments That Matter for Our People” initiative was introduced to support staff, it was not effectively followed through. I received positive feedback only a handful of times over four years.
