What's it like to be a Plasterer?
Plasterers paste layers of plaster onto floors, ceilings and walls. When it’s applied to a building, plaster serves dual functions of structural reinforcement and the implementation of a design aesthetic.
Tasks and duties
- Measuring and cutting plasterboard.
- Positioning and securing the panels to the walls and ceiling.
- Preparing and securing corner beads.
- Securing panel mouldings, cornices, ceiling centres and other kinds of plaster fittings.
- Pasting coats of plaster, render and cement using trowels.
- Levelling and smoothing plaster layers.
- Covering and smoothing over nail holes and joins, using plaster, sealing compounds and sandpaper.
- Applying finishing coats and adding decorative effects.
- Applying fireproofing, acoustic and insulating materials bonded with plaster.
How to become a Plasterer
You need to complete an apprenticeship to become a Plasterer, which will require completion of year 10.
- 1.Enrol in a Certificate III In Solid Plastering (CPC31011).The course will take 2-3 years to complete as part of an apprenticeship (depending on the provider or employer).
- 2.If you’re interested in continuing to learn about building and construction generally, you could apply for and complete a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50210).
