General Hands perform on-site support and administrative duties in industrial settings. They undertake work that keep a factory, warehouse, school and hospital grounds or commercial buildings running smoothly.
Tasks and duties
- Carrying out minor repairs using hand and power tools.
- Transporting goods.
- Hiring and managing sub-contractors.
- Moving furniture around.
- Cleaning and tidying.
- Deliveries to job sites and organisations.
- Data entry, customer service and record keeping.
- Maintaining tools and equipment.
- Manage rubbish and recycling.
- General environmental maintenance.
How to become a General Hand
To work as a General Hand in Australia, formal qualifications are not necessary, as on-the-job training is usually provided. However, it’s important to ensure you have the required certification needed to work on construction or building sites, such as a White Card.
- Decide which industry you want to work in (e.g. construction, landscaping or demolition), and complete training with a registered organisation to obtain a White Card.
- Investigate whether you need to provide your own personal protective equipment (such as steel-capped boots, helmets, high-visibility vests and face masks) and whether you need to obtain any further qualifications for safety or to operate certain equipment.
- Look into completing a TAFE course such as a Certificate II in Construction (CPC20112) to build on the knowledge you’ve gained on the job.
