What's it like to be a Farmhand?
Farmhands are workers who assist Farmers and Graziers with growing crops and raising livestock.
Tasks and duties
- Fencing and repairs.
- Mowing grass and fields.
- Spraying pesticides or fertiliser.
- Driving utes, motorbikes, tractors and quadbikes
- Managing irrigation.
- Working with livestock, including feeding and pasture rotation.
- Developing pastures.
- Harvesting crops.
- Ensuring animal health is optimal.
- Assisting animals that are giving birth, tending to newborns.
- Mechanical diagnostics and repairs.
- Milking cows, goats or sheep.
How to become a Farmhand
While qualifications are not essential to become a Farmhand, they may be an advantage when seeking employment.
- Obtain your drivers’ licence from the roads and traffic authority in your state. It may also help to consider obtaining a tractor licence.
- Gain an entry-level Junior Farmhand role and work your way up to having more responsibility through a direct traineeship.
- Consider completing a Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716), Certificate III in Agriculture (AHC30116) or a Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (AHC31420) from a TAFE or a registered training organisation.
