What's it like to be a Groundskeeper?
A Groundskeeper works to keep the grounds of buildings and institutions presentable, aesthetically pleasing and functional. They often work around schools, hospitals, residential apartments, golf courses, sporting facilities and cemeteries.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining lawns, sports fields, gardens and walkways.
- Marking out playing fields.
- Watering, fertilising, mowing and edging lawns.
- Sowing, planting, fertilising, trimming, mulching and pulling out flowers, shrubs, trees and weeds.
- Maintaining seats, benches, pergolas and signs.
- Cleaning up rubbish and debris from grounds, especially around walkways.
- Maintaining equipment and tools.
How to become a Groundskeeper
Formal qualifications are not required to work as a Groundskeeper. However, a vocational qualification may assist you to develop useful skills and knowledge.
- 1.You’ll need a Working With Children Check, a National Police Check and potentially a First Aid Certificate if you’re going to work in schools, hospitals or anywhere you might come into regular contact with kids.
- 2.You might want to consider a Certificate III in Sports Turf Management (AHC31316), available through TAFE or a registered training organisation, which will prepare you to maintain turf in sports facilities.
- 3.Alternatively, complete a Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716) to develop your skills and knowledge in general plant and garden maintenance.
