About the role

We are looking for a Superintendent HSE to join our Health, Safety & Environment team at Weipa Operations on a 12-month fixed-term contract. This is an exciting leadership opportunity to provide strategic direction and operational support across health, safety, emergency management and security functions, helping to create a safe, inclusive and high-performing workplace.

You will work closely with operational leaders, drive continuous improvement, strengthen critical risk management practices, and support our ambition of achieving zero harm. You will lead a team of HSE professionals while partnering across the business to ensure compliance, capability development and sustainable safety outcomes.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the Manager HSE Weipa, you will:

  • Lead and mentor a team of HSE professionals, fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement

  • Partner with operational leaders to enhance safety performance and embed effective risk management practices

  • Provide oversight of incident management and investigation processes, ensuring robust learning and sustainable corrective actions

  • Analyse health and safety data, identify emerging trends and support operational responses to improve performance

  • Lead the site's emergency management capability, including the Emergency Services team (professional) and the supporting Emergency Response Team (workplace volunteers)

  • Champion the Critical Risk Management (CRM) framework and drive assurance activities across the operation

  • Manage HSE reporting obligations and engagement with required regulatory bodies

  • Coordinate site audits, assessments and compliance activities, ensuring operational readiness and effective follow-ups

  • Provide governance and oversight of site security systems and accommodation village security services

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience within health, safety, emergency management or a related operational environment

  • Proven ability to influence and partner with leaders to improve safety performance and drive positive cultural outcomes

  • Strong incident investigation, risk management and compliance experience within a complex industrial setting

  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders, regulators, contractors and external partners

  • Experience interpreting and applying relevant health and safety legislation and regulatory requirements

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and develop practical improvement initiatives

  • Excellent communication, coaching and stakeholder engagement skills

  • A commitment to safety, inclusion and continuous improvement

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Health & Safety, Emergency Management, or related discipline

  • Experience working in remote, regional or resource-sector operations

  • Experience managing contractors and service providers

  • Financial accountability experience including budget management and delegated spending authority

Where you will be working

Our Weipa operations in Far North Queensland includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, shiploaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. 

Amrun, our newest mine, was completed in 2018 and will extend our Weipa bauxite operations by decades, significantly building on our 55-year history on the Western Cape, and providing jobs and supporting business growth in the region. The mine is located on traditional land. We work closely with the Traditional Owners to implement our agreements, ensuring that the benefits generated from mining support future generations and that important cultural heritage sites are identified and preserved.
