At Holyoake, we give people affected by alcohol, drug and mental health issues the support, hope and confidence they need to live the life they choose. By listening. By offering free counselling, peer-support and community programs across WA. By being here whenever you’re ready. We have what we call a family-systems approach. It’s non-judgemental and free to access at any point. And crucially, it’s evidence-based, working on the proven principle that when we address AOD (alcohol and other drugs) or mental health challenges holistically – when we come together as individuals and families, specialists and practitioners – we achieve better, life-changing outcomes.

    Our mission statement

Together, we can achieve so much more. Holyoake is a leading not for profit provider of alcohol and other drug and mental health support services that change lives and communities in WA. Our family-systems approach to alcohol, drug and mental health recovery and prevention is based on a simple premise: when we come together – as individuals, peer groups and families, as specialists and practitioners – the wraparound support we provide is more effective. In other words, we’re greater than the sum of our parts. And so, as one of our partners, your impact will be amplified.

What’s it like working at Holyoake?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees consistently praise the passionate and skilled clinicians at Holyoake, along with supportive colleagues who provide helpful debriefing. Staff find the client-facing work enjoyable and meaningful, with good clinical supervision. Recent reviews highlight positive changes under new executive leadership, noting transparent communication and efforts to embed a culture of safety.

However, there are some potential challenges, including varying experiences with management approaches and support levels, demanding workloads with limited time for debriefing, and organisational changes that have reduced some benefits. Some staff have noted challenges with workplace dynamics, and there appears to be a transition period as longer-serving employees adjust to new leadership.

    isolating and not supported
The good thingsclient work was enjoyable
The challengesWhile the leadership team claims to have “refreshed” the organisation and fixed issues attributed to former leadership, this does not align with staff experience. The messaging appears to deflect accountability and creates a misleading impression of improvement. In practice, culture concerns persist and staff support remains limited.
Executive GM People and WellbeingThank you for your feedback, and your contribution during your tenure with Holyoake. Culture is something we pay close attention to and we work hard to ensure staff feel safe sharing concerns. The view you have shared doesn't align with the feedback we hear from our current team, and we check in with them regularly. It's difficult to know what to make of that gap in experience. Culture is also a shared responsibility, shaped by everyone in the organisation. Anonymous reviews are hard to act on. If you have specific concerns I'd welcome that conversation directly, as that's the only way anything can be addressed.

    Psychologically unsafe workplace
The good thingsCounsellors and client facing staff are passionate and skilled.
The challengesThe worst management I have ever experienced, a highly psychologically unsafe place to work. Seeing the recent positive reviews are clearly them trying to re-write history and blame ground staff rather than taking accountability for the trauma and harm they caused many staff, which is very much the Holyoake way.
Executive GM People and WellbeingThank you for taking the time to share this feedback. We are very proud of the passion and talent of our people, and the impact they have with the people they support. We take feedback about culture and psychological safety seriously. We know know our staff need a culture where our values are authentically experienced every day, and where follow through occurs when concerns are raised. Culture can never be taken for granted and the current leadership team is committed to this ongoing work. I appreciate this hasn't been your experience and would welcome the opportunity to discuss your feedback with you personally should you wish to.

The good thingsThis is comfortably the best place I have ever worked. The new executive leadership is transparent, empowering and visionary and the clinicians are clear about their why.
