What’s it like working at Cochlear?

    AI summary of recent reviews

Employees at Cochlear value working on a meaningful product that helps people hear and positively impacts lives. They appreciate their friendly and hardworking colleagues, the flexible working hours and good work/life balance, and the beautiful working environment at the well-located Macquarie University campus facility.

However, there are some potential challenges, including management practices that may lack clear direction and accountability, limited career progression opportunities that can take longer than expected and may depend on visibility, high workload expectations relative to compensation in some roles, communication that could be more direct and transparent, and the demands of working in a highly regulated environment with substantial quality assurance requirements.

    Best avoided. Full stop.
The good thingsYou get to work with a truly life-changing product that’s unlike anything else.
The challengesSome senior leaders are clearly toxic, some staff are routinely mistreated. Nepotism is obvious; nobody even tries to hide it. Rewards go to those with the right connections.

    Not worth the stress
The good thingsGood products with a good propose
The challengesBetter leadership and fairer management practices. Team leaders often monitored staff in a micromanaging way (e.g. standing at the clean room door tracking break return times and publicly calling out minutes late). Concerns raised by team leaders were sometimes accepted without hearing the employee’s side. Overtime opportunities also felt inconsistent and not applied equally across the team. Overall, the workplace culture felt overly monitored and report-driven, similar to being treated like school rather than trusted as professionals.

    Great mission, toxic culture.
The good thingsGreat products developed by motivated and passionate people. There is a genuine drive to contribute to positive outcomes for customers.
The challengesToxic culture attributed largely to the actions and decisions, or lack there of, from middle management trying to create a name for themselves or trying to avoid having their lack of capability for their roles being found out
