Growing each day in altruism for the elderly.
The good thingsHelping the elderly residents feel not “a forgotten people” by caring for them and putting a smile on their faces by means of being able to help them with all their ADLs which is in an environment that is compassionate, respectful and with an altruistic approach. To also feel that from your co workers and management makes for a beautiful work environment knowing we are all supporting each other, all in the same boat no matter the role we have.
The challengesThe work is Stressful and very emotional for it’s mentally, physically and spiritually challenging each day as you are confronted with depression, grief, pain, and all the other emotions elderly encounter as they become more and more dependent on the carers that look after them to the end of their journey which no matter how hard you try not to get attached you end up taking that ride with them. And every one of them that you take this journey with is all different and all special.

    Aged Care Worker
    Feb 2020
1 to 2 years in the role
Trying to do a lot with little
The good thingsThe kitchen/lifestyle/laundry staff are really friendly and helpful. Most of the staff are friendly and most RN's are supportive. Most of the time consumables are available if you need extra
The challengesLack of rostered staff. Low staff to resident ratio, real lack of support for aggressive behaviours and challenging behaviour in Dementia wards. Very convoluted reporting systems, lots of extra documentation for carers and nurses, why fill out one concise form when you can do 3. Staff safety not a priority.
