What’s it like working at ASC?

    AI summary of recent reviews

ASC employees consistently praise their colleagues for being friendly, professional and supportive, creating valuable workplace relationships. The opportunity to work on interesting and diverse projects, particularly in sophisticated shipbuilding, is highly valued. The company offers good learning opportunities for technically oriented individuals, and provides competitive compensation, especially in engineering roles where salaries are reported to be 10-20% above market rates.

However, employees have identified several areas for improvement. There are concerns about management effectiveness, particularly regarding communication and decision-making processes. The workplace culture could benefit from more consistent policy enforcement and better interdepartmental collaboration. Workload management is challenging, with high overtime expectations and unrealistic timeframes. Additionally, career advancement opportunities appear limited, especially for non-engineering roles and women in leadership positions.

Pride and work satisfaction knowing we were making a difference!
The good thingsMeaningful work - supporting the Royal Navy protecting Australia and our families in this unique workplace - pride value was high. Enjoyed working with management team and work colleagues sharing the dedication to deliver a professional service within a highly productive and growth area , support and ongoing training availability. knowledge sharing especially with the many long serving workforce, training & development opportunities offered within WA, SA & overseas.
The challengesWorkload was high - always an issue with a growing workforce. However, management were aware and continuously improving systems and processes to support. Unsure how this could be more effectively improved. Decision to retire was difficult - this being my personal biggest challenge; walking away from the team and relationships built over 4 year period.

Incompetence, mismanagement and fragile egos. Not worth it.
The good thingsYou get to work on interesting projects. If you are motivated enough you will learn skills and gain experience that you can't get anywhere else.
The challengesManagement are promoted based on their annual salary increase so dont expect to be motivated or inspired. Decade or longer tenures often means they dont have the competencies to work effectivley in a modern workplace which makes your work harder. I often found myself, in a junior role, being relied on to produce policies and guidence materials where my senior with 20 years experience was unable to. Salary is set with the expectation of reasonable overtime so be ready to work late most nights.

Think twice, or use ASC as a training and move on
The good thingsMost Staff do want to see the business do well
The challengesThe Lack of Flexibility - despite this being advertised a perk. Inequity either in teams and across departments. Unrealist timeframes required and the amount of workload without providing extra staff support. Pay rate to the job description.
