What's it like to be a Tutor?
Tutors are hired to support students to excel academically. Employed privately or through a tutoring organisation, Tutors may be expected to attend different locations to work with different clients. Tutors can be university students looking to make some income, teachers working outside school hours as a second job, or university lecturers splitting their time across lecturing and tutoring.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Learning and memorising different curriculums.
- Planning study programs.
- Presenting material to students in new, digestible ways.
- Demonstrating practical aspects of study areas.
- Assessing and working with students’ different abilities.
- Preparing students for exams and assessments.
- Offering advice and feedback to students and their families.
How to become a Tutor
There are no specific qualifications required to work as a Tutor in Australia. However, a relevant qualification, experience and association memberships are often preferred by employers.
- 1.Complete your high school certificate and demonstrate good academic results.
- 2.Complete an education or teaching degree to build knowledge in a wide range of subjects. While studying, you may be able to work as a Tutor to gain experience. Alternatively, a qualification or experience in a specific discipline such as science or business can prepare you to tutor students in that field.
- 3.Ensure you have a current Working with Children Check. Some hirers may also prefer you to have a current National Police Check.
- 4.Consider joining the Australian Tutoring Association for further professional accreditation.
