What's it like to be a Teacher?
A Teacher is responsible for educating students at varying levels, and preparing lesson plans that teach to a curriculum. They can work in either early childhood, primary or secondary school environments, depending on their training and interests.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Preparing lesson plans in accordance with the set curriculum.
- For Primary School Teachers, educating children across a wide variety of subjects.
- For Secondary School Teachers, educating children more deeply in one or two specialist subject areas.
- Supervising students in class, in buildings and on the playground.
- Developing children’s abilities and interests.
- Nurturing children’s mental, emotional and relational health.
- Setting tests and exams, and conducting testing.
- Meeting with parents, family and guardians to discuss children’s progress, abilities, areas for further development and interpersonal relational styles.
- Helping to organise, and attending and facilitating school carnivals, fetes, sports days, musicals, after-school sports and excursions.
How to become a Teacher
To work as a Teacher, you’ll need to hold a degree or post-graduate level qualification in teaching. The course you’ll complete will depend on the age group of children you want to teach, or whether you want to specialise in a particular area.
- 1.Early Childhood Teachers are qualified to implement plans and teach children aged 4-8 years. They are heavily focused on children’s coordination, creativity and social skills. A Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) is required.
- 2.Primary School Teachers are qualified to implement plans and teach children aged 5-12. They tend to teach broadly and are heavily focused on embedding the foundations of reading, writing and arithmetic for higher learning. A Bachelor of Education (Primary) will usually take 4 years full-time.
- 3.High School (Secondary) Teachers may specialise in a subject area such as English and History, or Maths and Physics. A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) will also take 4 years to complete full-time.
- 4.If you want to teach in public schools, you’ll need to get an approval during your course to be able to go straight into a job. Make sure to check your state or territory’s education department regulations to register as a Teacher.
