What's it like to be a Packer?
Packers are responsible for preparing, inspecting and packing items for distribution or shipping. Packers usually work in warehouses and distribution centres for retail, logistics, wholesale or manufacturing companies.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing goods for dispatch by choosing, inspecting and packing items in accordance with customer requirements.
- Loading goods into shipping cartons, ensuring that all items are counted and recorded.
- Undertaking general warehouse duties, which may include cleaning, monitoring stock levels, machine operation and administration.
How to become a Packer
Formal qualifications are not required to become a Packer in Australia, as on-the-job training is usually provided. However, previous experience in a similar role is well regarded, as is having specialised skills (such as being qualified to drive a forklift).
- 1.Choose an industry and area to work in, such as food production, retail, logistics or manufacturing.
- 2.Investigate whether there are clothing, equipment, safety or certification requirements (such as a driver's licence, forklift qualification, medical check or steel cap boots and a high visibility vest).
- 3.Consider completing a TAFE course to build on the knowledge you’ve acquired on the job, such as a Certificate II in Warehousing Operations (TLI21616).
