What's it like to be a Bar Attendant?
Bar Attendants work in licensed establishments to serve drinks to customers, while also making sure the environment is well maintained. This includes picking up glasses, putting out coasters and setting tables. Bar Attendants work in pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and at events and festivals, and are usually supervised by a Bar Manager. Bar Attendants need a friendly demeanour, a good eye for detail and a flexible approach to work to be able to assist where needed at any given time.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Serving drinks, including pouring beers and making coffee.
- Taking food orders.
- Restocking drinks, snacks and coffee beans.
- Operating a point-of-sale terminal and EFTPOS machine.
- Cleaning spills, setting tables and putting out coasters.
- Tapping beer kegs and cleaning beer lines.
- Operating TAB and Keno.
- Facilitating payments from poker machines, or fixing them when they get stuck.
- Filling in timesheets, safety incident reports and stock control logs.
How to become a Bar Attendant
While you don’t need any educational qualifications to work as a Bar Attendant, you’ll need some competency certificates to get you started.
- You'll need a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). These are available through TAFE, private hospitality schools and online.
- You will also likely need a Responsible Service of Gambling if you’re going to work in an establishment that has gaming machines, or to broaden your options for environments you’re licensed to work in. These are available through TAFE and online.
- Alternatively, consider completing a qualification in hospitality, such as a Certificate III in Hospitality (SIT30616), which will include bar training as part of the curriculum.
