What's it like to be a Housekeeper?
Housekeepers clean houses and commercial buildings, such as hotels, motels and hospitals. Housekeepers also undertake duties such as taking care of plants, cooking, washing and ironing clothes and changing bedding.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Cleaning surfaces and wiping up spills.
- Sweeping and mopping floors.
- Vacuuming and shampooing carpets and upholstered furniture.
- Dusting, polishing and maintaining furniture, lamps and fixtures.
- Emptying rubbish bins.
- Stripping beds and changing sheets.
- Washing dishes, and cleaning kitchen cupboards and appliances.
- Sorting, washing, drying, ironing and repairing clothes.
- Cooking and preparing meals, shopping for groceries.
- Walking dogs, feeding and caring for pets.
- Caring for plants, taking messages, dropping off and picking up dry cleaning and running errands.
How to become a Housekeeper
Formal qualifications are not required to become a Housekeeper, but a course may assist you to develop your skills and knowledge.
- Consider completing a Certificate III in Hospitality (SIT30622) at TAFE or a registered training organisation. This course can be completed in approximately 18 months full-time.
- It may be an advantage to complete a short course and receive a Statement of Attainment in Food Handling (SITSS00050).
- Gain hands-on experience and on-the job training in an entry-level housekeeping role.
