What's it like to be a General Labourer?
General Labourers provide a range of services that usually involve manual or physical work within the building, construction and warehouse industries.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting qualified tradespeople such as Bricklayers, Plumbers and Landscapers with manual tasks including loading and unloading materials, cleaning tools, operating machinery, preparing job sites and digging trenches.
- Understanding how different building materials are used, and complying with safety procedures when using particular building items and equipment.
- Following written or verbal instructions from supervisor and ensuring that tasks are completed within the correct time frame.
How to become a General Labourer
To work as a General Labourer in Australia, formal qualifications are not necessary, as on-the-job training is usually provided. However, it’s important to ensure you have the required certification needed to work on construction or building sites, such as a White Card.
- Decide which industry you want to work in (e.g. construction, landscaping or demolition), and complete training with a registered organisation to obtain a White Card.
- Investigate whether you need to provide your own personal protective equipment (such as steel-capped boots, helmets, high-visibility vests and face masks) and whether you need to obtain any further qualifications for safety or to operate certain equipment.
- Look into completing a TAFE course such as a Certificate I in Construction to build on the knowledge you’ve gained on the job.

Basically I help all department around. Mostly I'm doing packing job, then I could help the knife hand department as like sharpen their knife, preparing the meats for them to cut, or I help them cut the meat as well, and sometimes going to the chiller to help bagging and pushing the carcasses.
