What’s it like working at AECOM?

    AI summary of recent reviews
Employees appreciate the friendly and supportive colleagues at AECOM, with many noting a strong sense of community across offices. Staff enjoy working on diverse and high-profile projects across various sectors, and value the modern office facilities in central locations with good amenities. The monthly drinks and social events help build team connections, and some employees benefit from flexible work arrangements and work-from-home options.

However, there are some potential challenges to consider. Management approaches can vary significantly between teams, with some employees noting that support and empathy levels differ. Workload can be demanding, with expectations to work beyond standard hours and occasional resource constraints. Some staff have found career progression challenging, and IT systems can be frustrating at times. Maintaining work-life balance may vary depending on the team, and as part of a large global organisation, decision-making processes can sometimes take longer.

    Traumatic experience.
The good thingsI enjoyed the open bars every fortnight as there was always a farewell for one lucky person getting out of this particular off. Most of the people PO3 or under were looking to get out into government or mining.
The challengesDepressing location. Toxic management, colleagues and work culture. Real dog-eat-dog mentality. Everyone could access and see everyone else's performance/billables dashboard

Toxic environment with most outdated systems I have ever seen. I don't ever want to work again.
The good things-Busy work environment - Nice location
The challengesIt is very common for the middle management to throw you under the bus. The expectation is to work over 45 hours every week and not ask for overtime. The IT and software are so outdated that they are an embarrassment to the Tier-1 company. The self-evaluation is a joke. Regardless of how much effort you put in, you receive a basic or less than inflation-matching pay rise.

Not the worst place I've worked, not the best place I've worked.
The good thingsGreat people Monthly drinks They supply a WFH kit I had a great manager in one role, they were a go getter,
The challengesRedundancies in November - EVERY year, just in time for the Christmas, when no one is hiring. I had a manager who shouldn't have been a manager - years at a company does not mean you know how to manage people.

AECOM will drain every ounce of joy in you
The good thingsModern office in central location. Monthly drinks
The challengesCost utilisation focus is everything and very little care for people who win and deliver the work. Asked to take personal leave to balance cost utilisation! No empathy. No flexibility, stigma around wfh or leaving early to do school pick ups. No trust in people.

The good thingsThe modern office and some people who are nice.
The challengesManagement is out of touch. No empathy for staff whatsoever. They only care about their KPIs and what makes them look good to their bosses. There is just too much work for little money

An excellent company to work for.
The good thingsInteresting and varied projects and an excellent work environment. You are part of a global organisation. Great culture. Strong safety focus, and looked after us during the pandemic. They really live the 'flexible working' promise, and are real believers in Diversity and Inclusion.
The challengesAs part of a global organisation there are times when requests for change can take a while to come back. There are also decisions made from overseas which are foisted on the local teams. Nothing that isn't manageable, it's just part of working for a huge organisation.

The best and worst of what you would expect from a big corporation
The good thingsOpportunities to work on high profile projects and learn from lots of smart engineers
The challengesManagement willing to freeze salaries and then brag about profitability in the same announcement. Feels like a stab in the back for the people who actually deliver projects and keep our clients happy.

I made my own opportunities and learned a lot on my own but for this reason, I was consistently taken advantage of, worked well above my "official" skills and pay grade and received no reward in terms of pay rises or recognition.
The good thingsAs with any challenging workplace, it's your colleagues which make coming to work bearable.
The challengesDespite repeatedly proving and extending myself, received no support or career development planning from management, in fact, was without a manager for 6 months as our team just didn't seem to matter to anyone.

I had a wonderful time working with AECOM and would absolutely recommend this company to others.
The good thingsThere truly is an excellent sense of community throughout all offices. Both management and peers were very kind and supportive. I was encouraged to develop new skills and challenge myself, while feeling like a valued part of my team.
The challengesHonestly, the biggest challenge was leaving. Challenges faced in the office had to do with my own personal development as an employee. They were met with full support, understanding, and encouragement.
