What's it like to be a Warehouse Manager?
Warehouse Managers plan and coordinate an organisation’s storage operations. They coordinate incoming and outgoing deliveries of stock, reconcile orders in databases and manage teams of warehouse staff.
Tasks and duties
- Receiving and dispatching goods including loading and unloading shipping containers.
- Reconciling incoming and outgoing stock with requisitions and updating inventory and stock location records.
- Examining incoming and outgoing stock to ensure proper fulfilment.
- Liaising with staff, senior managers and suppliers.
- Establishing and managing ongoing processes for receiving, handling and storing goods.
- Ensuring Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies are followed and creating a safety–conscious workplace culture.
- Performing new team member training and inductions.
- Supervising warehouse environment.
- Operating forklifts and other machinery to pick and store stock when necessary.
- Preparing delivery schedules.
- Planning and coordinating stocktakes.
- Printing labels detailing storage and despatch information.
How to become a Warehouse Manager
Formal qualifications are not essential to become a Warehouse Manager, but a relevant qualification will provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to get started. A current driver’s licence and forklift licence are usually required. Additional certifications for the completion of certain high–risk tasks may also be required.
- 1.Complete a relevant qualification such as the Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations (TLI30321).
- 2.Hold a current driver’s licence.
- 3.Get your Forklift Licence. This is attained by completing a short course from a registered training organisation (RTO).
- 4.You may need to complete additional High–risk work licences. High–risk work licences can be attained through an RTO and cover tasks such as working in high places.
