What's it like to be a Supply Chain Manager?
A key part of the role of Supply Chain Manager is to manage the purchase of raw materials in order to maintain sufficient supplies needed for production. Supply Chain Managers therefore play a crucial role in developing and maintaining good relationships with vendors, suppliers and distributors. The role is also responsible for the timely delivery of finished goods to the company’s customers so a solid background in logistics and customer service will be vital for success in this role.
Tasks and duties
- Planning and managing for demand, including Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) and purchasing decisions.
- Optimising the amount of inventory on hand needed in production as well as the storage of finished goods.
- Improving logistics, delivery systems and processes involved in dispatching finished goods to customers.
- Managing relationships and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with third party vendors and suppliers.
How to become a Supply Chain Manager
You’ll need a combination of education and experience to become a Supply Chain Manager. Supply Chain Managers usually have at least a bachelor degree in supply chain management, sales, logistics, or business administration.
- Complete a bachelor degree in a relevant field, such as a Bachelor of Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management).
- Gain at least 3-5 years of experience in customer service, logistics or business. Hiring managers will be specifically looking for strong negotiation skills and an ability improve efficiency.
