What's it like to be a Solutions Architect?
As a Solutions Architect you will be responsible for assessing current computer systems, designing and developing new technology solutions and integrating software and hardware to fit the existing enterprise environment in order to address the needs of an organisation. You will need to understand how processes, operating systems and application architectures work together.
Tasks and duties
- Defining solutions based on clients business needs.
- Writing test plans that meet the acceptance criteria of features.
- Developing proofs-of-concept to validate solution feasibility.
- Identifying project issues and risks and presenting alternatives.
- Documenting client user stories and technical constraints and requirements.
- Producing component specifications and translating them into designs for implementation.
- Leading technical analysis, implementation and deployment.
- Performing project assurance to ensure solutions aligns with existing systems.
How to become a Solutions Architect
To become a Solutions Architect, you usually need a bachelor degree and extensive industry experience. Some employers may prefer candidates with a postgraduate degree.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in a relevant field, such as information technology, information systems, software engineering or computer science.
- 2.Consider advancing your skills with a postgraduate degree that focuses on systems architecture, such as a Master of Engineering (Software), or management and leadership, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
- 3.Gain industry experience. This can start with an internship while you’re studying. Seek roles that focus on internet technologies, programming languages and system design, such as Computer Programmer or Software Developer.
- 4.Continue to develop specialised skills through IT certifications, such as Microsoft Azure Certification.
