What's it like to be a Site Manager?
A Site Manager oversees and directs a variety of projects from the beginning through to completion. Site Managers typically work on worksites in the building and construction industry. Site Managers must have strong project management skills in addition to knowledge of building regulations and occupational health and safety protocols.
Tasks and duties
- Co-ordinating labour activity on worksite and managing overall site performance of building and construction process, including liaising with sub-contractors and suppliers.
- Reviewing building practices to ensure compliance with forecast budgets, project management procedures and health and safety guidelines.
- Implementing and updating documentation as required, such as a site diary and incident reports.
How to become a Site Manager
Site Managers are usually qualified tradespeople who also have several years experience being employed on worksites. Specialised qualifications in building and construction management may be highly valued by employers.
- Most Site Managers begin as entry-level employees in the building and construction industry. Ensure you have your White Card, and gain experience by taking on progressively more responsibility at your worksite. This may include helping managers and supervisors to deliver projects within time and budget constraints.
- Complete management qualifications, such as a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50210), Diploma of Building and Construction (Management) (CPC50320), or a Bachelor of Construction Management.
