Tasks and duties
- Observing and recording patient healthcare problems and behaviour
- Giving medication to patients and operating medical equipment associated with patients' healthcare outcomes.
- Preparing patients for examinations, assisting in operations and providing post-operative care.
How to become a Registered Nurse
To become a Registered Nurse in Australia you need to complete a bachelor degree in nursing. This usually takes 3 years of full-time study and provides a blend of theory and clinical nursing experiences.
- 1.Complete an approved bachelor degree such as a Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Science (Nursing) or Bachelor of Nursing Science. To gain entry to these courses, you must meet English language requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
- 2.Alternatively, if you have already completed an undergraduate degree in a different field, complete a two-year masters degree in nursing.
- 3.Apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to practise as an RN. Registration must be renewed annually.
- 4.RNs with several years' experience can move into more specialised roles (such as aged care, neonatology or neurological care), transfer into the medical administrative sector, or become a Nurse Unit Manager or Nurse Practitioner.
