What's it like to be a Project Accountant?
A Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial activities that occur throughout a project’s lifecycle.
Tasks and duties
- Ensure projects are managed according to relevant financial contracts and that they are financially viable.
- Approve expenses and liaise with project managers to approve invoicing.
- Track financial progress of projects by conducting monthly results analysis, project reporting, budgeting and forecasting, scenario analysis and cost analysis.
How to become a Project Accountant
To work as a Project Accountant, a bachelor’s degree in the field of accounting is required, and a Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) qualification is desirable and likely to offer a competitive edge.
- Complete a bachelor degree in the field of accounting. This could be a Bachelor of Accounting or a Bachelor of Business (Majoring in Accounting). These are usually three year courses and are open to anyone who is 17 years of age or older and has completed year 12 with the necessary Universities Admission Index.
- Gather professional experience in project accounting, being sure to undertake professional development activities each year.
- Complete a Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting (GradDip CA) or a CPA program.
