Mortgage Brokers are licensed financial advisers who act as a link between borrowers and lenders. Most Mortgage Brokers tend to work for professional mortgage broking organisations, and a large part of their role is to research the features, options, fees and charges of various loans in order to find the best fit for their clients. Mortgage Brokers provide independent and ongoing support and advice, up to pre-approval of a home loan, and in some case, up to settlement.Did you find this video helpful?
Tasks and duties
- Assessing clients' financial situations and personal needs in order to determine their borrowing capacity and find a suitable home loan.
- Researching home loan packages and providing impartial advice to clients about the best available options.
- Facilitating and managing the loan application and settlement process.
How to become a Mortgage Broker
To become a Mortgage Broker in Australia, you need to complete an approved qualification, obtain a licence and gain experience under a mentor.
- Complete an approved qualification such as a Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking (FNS40821).
- While a Diploma in Finance and Mortgage Broking Management (FNS50320) is not a requirement for licensing, some employers may prefer brokers with this qualification in addition to a Certificate IV.
- Apply for an Australian Credit Licence (ACL) through the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
- Join a professional association such as the Finance Brokers Association of Australia (FBAA) or Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA). Your association will help to connect you with a practising Mortgage Broker who will mentor you through the first two years of your career.
