What's it like to be a Maintenance Technician?
A Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing general maintenance and repairs on equipment and assets, assists with the installation of equipment and manages the upkeep of tools, equipment and machinery.
Tasks and duties
- Undertaking planned and ad-hoc maintenance tasks to ensure equipment is working as required and is compliant with safety regulations.
- Diagnosing faults with equipment and troubleshoot in order to minimise equipment downtime and ensuring that critical services remain operational.
- Implementing preventative maintenance measures and scheduling regular maintenance and cleaning programs, in addition to providing operational support and training to other staff.
How to become a Maintenance Technician
Maintenance Technicians are usually individuals who have trade qualifications and proven maintenance experience. Depending on the field in which you work, employers may also require Maintenance Technicians who have formal qualifications in the field.
- Decide which industry you want to work in and investigate the qualifications requirements, such as a Diploma of Engineering - Technical Engineering.
- Check to see whether you also need special licences, such as a forklift or high-risk licence.
- There are different pathways available to Maintenance Technicians who wish to further their career, such as becoming a Maintenance Supervisor or a Maintenance Manager.
