What's it like to be a Maintenance Carpenter?
Maintenance Carpenters are skilled tradespeople who carry out all round maintenance. This includes tasks such as: refurbishments, fit out and de-fit out projects, repairs to building façades and interiors, painting and patching, replacing doors and door locks, and related ad-hoc maintenance duties.
Tasks and duties
- Study building plans and drawings to work out the materials required and how best to install features.
- Install items such as window shades, venetian blinds, curtain rods, wall fans and door locks for tenants.
- Build, repair and install counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, building framework and trim using carpenter's hand and power tools.
How to become a Maintenance Carpenter
Most Maintenance Carpenters have completed a carpentry apprenticeship and have some general maintenance experience. Previous experience working in maintenance roles is generally valued.
- Find and apply for a carpentry apprenticeship. An Apprenticeship Network provider or Group Training Organisation in your area can help you find a host employer and start your apprenticeship.
- Complete a Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220). This usually takes between three and four years to complete.
- Apply for a Certificate of Completion. This nationally recognised accreditation shows that you have completed your training and are ready to start working in the carpentry industry.
