What's it like to be a Law Clerk?
Law Clerks are legal studies graduates who provide support to Solicitors, Lawyers and Judges. They conduct research, compile case files, prepare legal documents and write reports. Law Clerks may also perform specialised clerical tasks related to court proceedings.
Tasks and duties
- Supporting legal teams with decisions and strategies.
- Conducting legal research and offer analysis and interpretation.
- Preparing briefs, legal documents, reports and evidence.
- Supervising the filing of documents.
- Managing the junior members of the legal team.
- Performing basic courtroom duties.
- Scheduling appointments and coordinating meetings.
- Attending hearings to take notes and writing court reports.
How to become a Law Clerk
While not essential, many Law Clerks complete a relevant tertiary qualification before entering the role.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Law. If you already have a degree in another discipline, you can complete a Juris Doctor. Alternatively, a VET qualification such as an Advanced Diploma of Legal Practice (22565VIC) can introduce you to some of the skills required for the role.
- 2.Seek an internship while studying to gain hands-on experience assisting lawyers with their daily duties.
