What's it like to be an IT Manager?
As an IT Manager you will oversee a company’s technology resources. This typically includes the networks, phone systems and other software. You will monitor the organisation's operational requirements, research strategies and technology solutions, and build the most cost-effective and efficient systems to achieve business goals. Tasks and duties
- Dealing with server crashes, setting up new servers, removing old hardware or streamlining IT systems.
- Managing information technology and computer systems.
- Controlling and evaluating IT and electronic data operations.
- Managing IT staff.
- Designing, developing, implementing and coordinating systems, policies and procedures.
- Ensuring data security, network access and backup systems.
- Identifying problematic areas and implementing strategic solutions.
- Auditing systems and assessing their outcomes.
- Preserving assets, information security and control structures.
- Handling annual budgets and ensuring cost effectiveness.
How to become an IT Manager
IT Managers typically have a bachelor degree and extensive industry experience.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in computer science, information technology, IT project management or a related field.
- 2.Complete an internship while you study to build practical skills for the role and work under experienced IT Managers.
- 3.Consider advancing your skills in IT and/or management with a postgraduate degree, such as a Master of Information Technology or Master of Business Administration.
- 4.Gain extensive experience in the IT industry. Consider starting off in roles that focus on IT systems. Roles that involve coordinating projects and leading people and processes will be beneficial.
