What's it like to be an IT Business Analyst?
An Information Technology Business Analyst works with management and stakeholders to define their business requirements and translate these into solutions.
Tasks and duties
- Gathering, documenting and analysing business requirements.
- Researching and assessing current processes, technologies and systems in order to gain an understanding of the problems and challenges to be overcome.
- Creating data models, process diagrams and wireframes.
- Working closely with key business decision makers as well as development and testing teams to offer guidance and advice on what solutions will best fit the business’ needs, now and into the future.
- Liaising with developers and system architects to ensure the system is correctly implemented.
- Monitoring solutions for continuous improvement.
- Producing training manuals and user documentation to support newly adopted systems, technology or procedures.
How to become an IT Business Analyst
Pathways to becoming an IT Business Analyst in Australia typically involve a mixture of education and work experience.
- Complete a bachelor degree in business administration, information systems or a related field. Alternatively, for students with previous tertiary qualifications in an unrelated field, complete a postgraduate qualification in business administration or a similar discipline.
- Familiarise yourself with the International Institute of Business Analysis™ BABOK® Guide. This globally recognised guide is the accepted standard for the concepts and techniques applied to business analysis.
- Gain work experience. Many IT Business Analysts find entry-level roles in other analytical disciplines and work their way up, so consider applying for roles such as data analyst, systems analyst or finance analyst to begin gaining experience.
- Apply for certification. Although not mandatory, as an IT Business Analyst you can gain certification with The International Institute of Business Analysis™.
