What's it like to be a Dietitian?
Dietitians are qualified healthcare specialists who specialise in the field of human nutrition, with a focus on the relationship between food and health. Dietitians undertake mandatory tertiary study and are experts in dietetics, using this knowledge to provide people of all ages with guidance on how to manage their diet, reduce risk of illness and improve their health.
Tasks and duties
- Planning diets and menus and providing guidance on the functional requirements and importance of diet and on the planning and preparation of food.
- Collecting, organising and assessing relevant health and nutrition data.
- Planning and implementing regular nutrition assessments and intervention programs.
- Monitoring food intake and quality against diet plan.
- Consulting with other Health Professionals and related workers to manage the dietary and nutritional needs of patients.
How to become a Dietitian
To become a Dietitian in Australia, you will need to complete a degree that has been accredited by Dietitians Australia and join the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program.
- 1.Complete an accredited bachelor degree in dietetics.
- 2.Alternatively, if you have already completed an undergraduate degree, complete an accredited masters degree in dietetics. Some institutions may require you to have completed set prerequisite subjects in your undergraduate degree.
- 3.Become a member of Dietitians Australia and join their Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) program. You will need to complete a provisional year which includes formal mentoring from a Full APD. To maintain your APD status, you will need to demonstrate 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) each year and maintain recency of practice hours.
