What's it like to be a Data Engineer?
Data Engineers are computer science experts who develop new ways to store and access large amounts of data. They design, build and test data architectures and tools that enable easier access and interpretation of data in a business context.
Tasks and duties
- Developing, constructing, testing and maintaining data architectures.
- Analysing and interpreting large data sets.
- Aligning data access and presentation to business requirements.
- Using a range of programming languages and data analysis tools.
- Using data to increase efficiency and illustrate and achieve business goals.
- Building tools for easier data access and interpretation.
- Conducting data analysis and preparing reports.
- Testing and deploying advanced data analysis tools and techniques such as algorithms and machine learning.
How to become a Data Engineer
It is possible to work as a Data Engineer without formal qualifications, but this is a highly technical role requiring a degree–level knowledge of data, computer science and analytics. A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related IT discipline is recommended.
- 1.Complete a bachelor degree in computer science. This is typically a three–year course of full–time study.
- 2.Consider completing postgraduate study such as the Master of Computer Science. This is typically a two–year course of full–time study.
- 3.It may be beneficial to further your specialisation in Data Engineering through a Data Science bootcamp or the completion of industry–recognised Data Engineering certifications.
- 4.Join the ACS while studying and attain full certification upon graduation. Certification requires Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
