What's it like to be a Consultant?
Consultants identify areas of opportunity for client businesses, including operational efficiencies and increased profitability. They most often work for consulting companies. Consultants work across a range of industries and may have previous experience in the field they chose to consult in. Common Consultant roles include Analytics Consultant, Human Resources Consultant and Sales Consultant.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting research, analysing data and undertaking surveys and interviews to gain perspective on the business and the market it’s in.
- Identifying problems and areas for change.
- Using tools and techniques to sift through problems quickly to prioritise them.
- Creating solutions and making recommendations.
- Gaining feedback and buy-in from clients.
- Implementing solutions and executing strategies.
- Facilitating training and troubleshooting resistance.
How to become a Consultant
While qualifications are not essential to become a Consultant, they can be helpful to improve your business skills and increase your employment prospects.
- 1.Complete a Bachelor of Management. This will take approximately 3 years to complete full-time and you’ll need to have completed year 12 or to apply for flexible entry.
- 2.You could also consider closely related degrees, such as a Bachelor of Business or a Bachelor of Economics. They will both take 3 years full-time.
- 3.Go one step further and earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Entry requirements vary from college to college, but generally you’ll need to have completed an undergraduate degree and have significant work experience.
