What's it like to be a Collections Officer?
Collections Officers contact customers with overdue bills to initiate payments and negotiate settlement plans. If agreeable terms can’t be reached, Collections Officers initiate escalated collections actions.
Tasks and duties
- Answering inbound and outbound calls.
- Advising on repayment plans to suit level of debt and customer circumstances.
- Escalating calls to managers when required.
- Adhering to legislative guidelines and the Privacy Act.
- Entering data and maintaining accurate records.
- Facilitating advanced collections activity, such as sending letters of demand and reminder messages.
- Referring customers to independent financial advisors.
- Improve operational processes.
- Work to key performance indicators.
How to become a Collections Officer
No formal educational qualifications are necessary to become a Collections Officer, but prior related experience or a tertiary qualification may be an advantage.
- Gain experience in a customer service, account management or bookkeeping role.
- Complete a Certificate III in Mercantile Agents (FNS30415).
- A degree in commerce, accounting, finance, economics or legal studies may be an advantage when seeking to progress your career.
