What's it like to be an Area Manager?
An Area Manager is responsible for the performance and revenue of a number of stores in a geographical area. Area Managers set targets and work with store managers in the allocated area to increase the success of the stores. Area Managers work for retail organisations, cinemas, restaurants and franchises. Area Managers may be required to travel extensively as part of their role.
Tasks and duties
- Setting targets for the stores located in the area.
- Creating performance objectives for stores to follow.
- Reporting on area metrics.
- Evaluating staff and team performance.
- Coaching store managers.
- Providing training and development.
- Resolving problems in the area when they arise.
- Maximising sales and profitability across the stores in the area.
How to become an Area Manager
You don’t need any formal qualifications to become an Area Manager. However, it’s likely that you’ll need previous experience as a Store Manager or in a sales role to become an Area Manager.
- Consider enrolling in a Certificate III in Business (Customer Engagement) (BSB30120) to develop your skills.
- Alternatively you may prefer to complete a Certificate IV in Retail Management (SIR40316).
